Exactly. If anything, I’d much rather like to see a secondary USB-C port, preferably on top of the device. That would be an actual benefit for almost everyone.

As someone who has previously argued that user/kernel-level distinction is pretty pointless (along the lines of this XKCD), the multi-user aspect is something I haven’t considered before and actually quite important.

The History and Future of Digital Ownership (www.theverge.com)

I’d like to get the community’s feedback on this. I find it very disturbing that digital content purchased on a platform does not rightfully belong to the purchaser and that the content can be completely removed by the platform owners. Based on my understanding, when we purchase a show or movie or game digitally, what...

It’s quite amazing that these people don’t realize that they’re just reinventing DRM, but worse.

Wait, am I seeing correctly? Did they really go so far as to completely disable the issue system in GitHub in favor of Discord?

That’s certainly a… choice.

@nekusoul@lemmy.nekusoul.de avatar

The issue has now been commented on and was closed by the maintainer, where they explained why those blocks would be nonsense.

Hilariously, the issue creator still hasn’t given up and is now trying to communicate with the maintainer privately. 🙃

I’d really want to know what’s driving them. Surely no sane person would be this persistent without some ulterior motives?

Looks this is a refresh for those who were on the edge of buying one or those who really love OLED.

Personally, I would’ve instantly sold mine and upgraded if these also had VRR. Hopefully the proper next generation of these devices comes with it.

Yup. Small Intel NUC, Linux, and one of those Air mouse remotes are all I need.

It’s hard not to be that guy and mention how neat such a setup is every time I have to watch someone else fumbling around with the horribly designed and ad-ridden UI of their “smart” TV.

Personally I hate these tools with a passion as every single one I’ve seen goes overboard and disables potentially wanted features or straight up breaks stuff in its default configuration. It’s always fun to figure out what’s wrong with a machine only to eventually figure out that the owner used one of those tools a few months ago.

IMO people should either do these changes themselves or use another OS, though ultimately there needs to be legislation against this to help the non-technical people.

Annoyingly, this doesn’t mean that you can register without a phone number. I hope that this is only the first step towards making that happen and not some sort of compromise of the original goal.

I still use Signal because I think it’s still the best tool so far (that has people I know using it), but I’m always iffy about services using phone numbers as their primary identifier.

As someone who knows almost nothing about the topic, wouldn’t some (most?) of these parts be big enough that a small change in temperature or air pressure alone would cause these parts to expand/shrink enough to go over the tolerance limit?

It’s certainly not wrong to take a look into Microsoft and its subscription business, but I don’t see much success in pressing this particular point: Not only was there always some sort of free version of Teams since 2018, but since 2022 there has been a Teams Essentials subscription, a version that doesn’t bundle O356.

If anything I’d like some compensation for the loss in sanity you get trying to understand the dozen different subscriptions and (incompatible) versions of Teams, all of which are confusingly named.

The Llama Is Back: Winamp Announces Historic Relaunch (www.autoevolution.com)

After a prolonged absence, Winamp is making a historic comeback with a new generation of features designed to cater to modern users’ needs. The relaunched version aims to combine the nostalgia of the original Winamp with cutting-edge enhancements, such as integration with streaming platforms, cloud syncing, and support for...

Are we sure this isn’t some elaborate piece of long-form satire? It’s wild to me that they’d try to execute such a blatant cashgrab when the name Winamp stands for pretty much the opposite of what they’re trying to peddle.

I’m using a combination of KeePassXC on Windows/Linux, KeePass2Android and Syncthing for database synchronization, plus a Yubikey for 2FA. Granted, it’s not a setup I’d recommend towards non-tech people, but it would take a lot before I’d switch:

  • Works completely local, so I never have to worry about being locked out for any reason.
  • Despite that, I still get the benefits of online synchronization through Syncthing.
  • KeePassXC has by far the most powerful autotype functionality, which is a big timesaver since I often need to type passwords into non-browser windows.

The last point in particular was a dealbreaker when trying out Bitwarden/Vaultwarden a few years ago.

Two things I also like to do is changing my Youtube bookmark to https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions and adding the following two filters to uBlock:

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">www.youtube.com##.ytp-endscreen-content
</span><span style="color:#323232;">www.youtube.com###related
</span>

This basically makes it so that I only see videos from channels I’m actually subscribed to, without having any content pushed on me from the algorithm.

Neat. I usually only watch videos from my PC, but that’ll be great way to stock up on a few videos when traveling.
