I have loved Louis Jordan for years. Back in the iPod days, I filled my iPod with as much Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, the Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers as I could and it would be all I would listen to for weeks at a time.
I think it was more Rosalind Chao’s performance than anything in the writing. Which is weird, because she basically played the opposite character in MAS*H. But she and Colm Meany just didn’t seem to have any chemistry. Maybe they didn’t actually like each other?
Honestly, she’s fine in other roles. There was just something about Keiko that didn’t work and I do think it had something to do with her interpretation of Keiko. But she’s been in lots of other shows (she got a lot of notice for her performance in MAS*H) and she did a perfectly good job in them. She would be very unlikely to have 139 acting credits to her name on the IMDB if she was not a talented actor.
So I just can’t say what went wrong there. It wasn’t the writing, because totally different writers were handling her on DS9 than they were on TNG, but the problem existed on both shows (although certainly TNG to a lesser extent). It wasn’t that she isn’t a good actress, because (at least IMO) she is a good actress. So that leaves two options that I can think of, feel free to come up with your own:
1- She interpreted the character all wrong and by the time they really developed her, it was too late.
2- Rick Berman fucked around behind the scenes as usual.
I can see what you’re saying, but I still find something very unlikeable about Keiko as a character and have felt that way as far back as the original run on DS9, if not TNG (not sure what I thought of her before watching reruns). I think I’m far from alone.
And like I said, it’s not Rosalind Chao as an actress. I have no problem enjoying her characters in other shows.
What’s astounding to me is any of us old enough to remember 9/11 remember the phrase “9/11 changed everything.” But school after school has massacres of children and it changes nothing.
I guess I would call it as close to that as TV gets. I don’t think I would really describe it as nicer, certainly not a damned sight nicer, just not put together by a set designer and limited by a budget that restricted the number of extras they could hire.
I’m wondering if Chromebooks can run Firefox? I’m guessing not. I know you can install adblockers on them. Not after mid-2024, I guess.
It really sucks that an affordable notebook computer means getting locked into an advertising system. You can get a Chromebook for under $100 and they have a very, very easy-to-use OS. They’re great for poor people and elderly people.
So much for putting an adblocker on Grandma’s computer now.
Sure, but do you think Grandma who spent $100 on a Chromebook at Walmart is going to be able to figure out Linux even if their grandson knows how to install it? Chrome OS is the push-here-dummy of OSes. You really can’t get much simpler. This is dangling a carrot in front of them so they’ll be forced to look at endless advertising.
My mother-in-law, who has a Chromebook, doesn’t want a tablet because she wants a reliable keyboard. That makes sense to me.
Also, lots of school systems have opted to give their students Chromebooks and turning educational platforms into advertising platforms is criminal. Currently, my daughter’s school Chromebook (thankfully she returns it in a few weeks) is ad-free unless she goes to a third party website. How long is that going to last?
“Just get a Linux tablet” is not a universal solution. Nor is all of these people saying people should just get older refurbished or used notebooks instead. That will work for some people, sure, but it will not work for all people. Not for school systems and not for people who already own Chromebooks and can’t handle a Linux learning curve.
That said, according to others, you can install FF on them through their Android compatibility, but how long will Google allow that?
I’m sorry, but “just switch to X” is really not a solution for a lot of people. And they don’t deserve this from companies like Google.
Voyager actually had to cut back on basic but unnecessary resources like real coffee. On BSG, they never ran out of cigarettes. Was there a cigarette cargo ship in the fleet?
Can you imagine how cool it would be to see reproductions of those early planes flying? They wouldn’t have to stop at the first flight. They could do something like go up through WWI.
I wish I could run Linux on it, but it’s for her online school next semester and they specified either Mac or Windows. I’m guessing there’s a proprietary software situation. Honestly though, she’s so inexperienced with Windows (her previous school notebook was a Chromebook issued by the school) that I don’t think she’s ready for Linux. She screwed things up just playing with system sounds and I had to rescue her.
