Nah, the scammers would use a bum from the street to register. Or buy stolen data, like people already do with ID scans.

Even after switching to a wireless headset (because the previous ones all broke at the wire), I would rather not use a device with no headphone jack. My headset has a very long battery life and can apparently have its battery changed fairly easily (big enough to be held together by screws). But neither of this can be said about earbuds, so my earbuds are staying wired.

We do have new playgrounds, but the problem is that they’re very sanitized and only really suitable for preschoolers. Tweens usually just wander around without any exact place to go.

As a child, I was just not given home wi-fi password, and the cell plan effectively had no internet (to be fair, parents were on the same call-and-sms only plans as well). I definitely did not want internet bad enough to wander around in search of public wi-fi.

I think if the kids want to bully, they’d just find a lonely and defenseless target and invent an excuse. If you are a potential target, having an expensive phone wouldn’t save you anyway.

I think it depends the most on whether the child has a group of friends or not.

Costs a fortune, hard to repair, no SD slot, no headphone jack, until recently could not be used with the chargers you have for everything else… At least for me it is a “no”.

Passkeys might really kill passwords (www.theverge.com)

Passkeys: how do they work? No, like, seriously. It’s clear that the industry is increasingly betting on passkeys as a replacement for passwords, a way to use the internet that is both more secure and more user-friendly. But for all that upside, it’s not always clear how we, the normal human users, are supposed to use...

EngineerGaming,
@EngineerGaming@feddit.nl avatar

For me, it is the opposite. I would need passkeys to be like my SSH keys - not dependent on some proprietary software and never touching any cloud. For now I am a little bit afraid lock-in might happen at some point, so I wait until the technology matures enough until I can use KeepassXC for it confidently.

I see SMS as a simple deanon rather than a 2FA.

I draw the line at the password manager being fully local.

Less resource-heavy than Matrix, doesn’t have the “store everything from your every chat” feature and thus requiring less space, more mature, very easy to set up.

OMEMO is implemented, at least in major clients. I use it all the time.

Verify - as in what? The algorithm is open-source. If you’re talking about the keys, yes, you can view the keys used in a conversation and check if the fingerprints match.

You are also forgetting millions of consumers still running Windows XP or 7 and not upgrading not because something critical depends on it, but because “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”.

Gen Z here. I was given the freedom you described, but I don’t really think having a dumbphone with you on a walk is restrictive (unless your parents check on you constantly). That’s far from “spy apps and cameras around”, like you described. I knew my mother wouldn’t call me unless it was really necessary, and would myself warn her that everything’s alright if I was returning late. Most of the time I could leave the phone at home with mother none the wiser, but did take it when I went far and/or late.

EngineerGaming,
@EngineerGaming@feddit.nl avatar

That is, indeed, crazy. My point was that presence of a phone by itself is not unhealthy (even though I’d indeed opt for a dumbphone for a young child).

FF with Ublock is not a very comfortable experience. I much prefer Newpipe.

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

“Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

I lost mine several times - I didn’t always use to have backups. Two were on MP3 players that stopped working. One was on an old smartphone, which worked but which I just didn’t bother copying most of the data from. Once I just wiped it accidentally. In hindsight - I don’t mind, that would’ve got cleaned up anyway.

EngineerGaming,
@EngineerGaming@feddit.nl avatar

I do use streaming (although for free) to find new tracks. But I cannot imagine having my PRIMARY collection there, mostly because it’s so locked-down. You can’t use it on a dumb MP3 player, you can’t use a player application of your choice, etc.

EngineerGaming,
@EngineerGaming@feddit.nl avatar

I don’t normally use a phone to search for memes, but have a similar situation with game screenshots. But I solve it by just occasionally going through folders and sorting them instead of doing so on the spot. Adding metadata to MP3s, however, happens just like what you described, just because I don’t like leaving tracks without album art.

I am Gen Z, and my whole social life is on IRC. So weird to be around so many people who were online since before my parents even had a computer…

EngineerGaming,
@EngineerGaming@feddit.nl avatar

How do you count your visits? I don’t even see whether mine has visits or not lol. I am not even sure if counting people would count as “tracking”, so I am not sure whether it’s acceptable in my books. The only feedback I got were a couple of emails.

EngineerGaming,

In one XMPP group I was in that got spammed, they just disabled the ability to speak without manual approval. Was your “guild” too big for that? Can Discord do something like this? Because giving phone number to something as shady as Discord is just inappropriate.

Even putting whether it works aside, how do you register a Google Voice account without giving Google your number?
