AlmightySnoo,

agree that the name is silly, it apparently also broke the tl;dr bot below

YouTube Says New 5-Second Video Load Delay Is Supposed to Punish Ad Blockers, Not Firefox Users (www.404media.co)

Firefox users are reporting an 'artificial' load time on YouTube videos. YouTube says it's part of a plan to make people who use adblockers "experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using."

AlmightySnoo,

Haven’t experienced that so far (but that’s probably because I don’t log into my YouTube account anymore and mostly use private browsing), but I imagine that’s something that adblockers will eventually be able to block?

AlmightySnoo,

I’m pretty sure Elon can pay that btw.

But that will involve more TSLA stock fire sales (as that’s literally what he did the last time he needed to pay Twitter’s bills, his “net worth” is mostly unrealized gains from his shares) and he will face more backlash for that from Tesla investors. His house of cards will collapse quicker the more he resorts to that as there’s a limit to how long Tesla investors can stay patient with him treating them as his personal ATM.

AlmightySnoo,

it’s been really strange seeing so many comments cheering for Sam Altman

It’s the same with Elon’s cult. People probably really believe that Sam is a genius and the one who made ChatGPT (just like Elon’s fanboys really believe that he’s involved with Tesla’s engineering), so they see him, alongside Elon, as a symbol of meritocracy and they get angry at the board for ousting someone just because they’re “afraid” of a “genius”.

AlmightySnoo,
AlmightySnoo,

You can check many of the Sam dick riding contests in the comments in any Sam Altman related thread and how most are advancing the classic “she’s just a gold digger who suddenly remembers he raped her only after he got rich” or “she looks unhinged, story likely made up” theses that are usually used to protect rapists and discredit rape victims, while trying to bury the rape story with massive downvotes every single time.

AlmightySnoo, (edited )

When you point out that figure, it’s also important to provide more context and take into account the fact that Satya Nadella promised to hire every single OpenAI employee and not just Sam Altman, and the high likelihood that the board will not resign. It’s not hard to imagine that for many, going to Microsoft and working in a for-profit environment with potentially higher bonuses (as they’d be more encouraged to seek much higher profits than under OpenAI) is a significant career upgrade (good for them, but the point here is to not let the headlines make you think that there’s some warm & fuzzy “we love Sam” moment happening).

The OpenAI salaries are pretty low (archive.ph/jPbYR ) compared to what Microsoft offers (archive.ph/nonSV ), and as I said all of that doesn’t include the potential bonuses that would result from those teams aggressively pursuing profit at Microsoft.

Is it usual that all the family and even therapists side against alleged victim?

On the family conspiring against a single member part, you might want to look up Harrison Post or watch the “Britney vs Spears” documentary (though that’s a bit different and doesn’t have to do with rape, Britney was the rich person and her family conspired against her to take over her wealth, had a psychiatrist, James Spar, fabricate a report against her that subsequently just miraculously disappeared from the court files and even picked a lawyer for her who would side with them).

Going back to this story, the “shht, let’s not ruin the future of our child prodigy, so even if Sam did something bad to you you will keep your mouth shut” is not that rare among families. Conspiracies by families to cover up rape done by one of them do happen:

Another very important point that makes Annie Altman’s story highly believable is that since 2020 she’s been resorting to sex work (and also begged on Instagram one day) just to survive, while Sam has a net worth of over half a billion. As I said in another comment, if one of your siblings needs to do sex work to survive while you have hundreds of millions of $s at your disposal, then no matter whether the accusations are true or not, you’re the bad person and there’s something fundamentally evil about you. Going back to the sex work part, here’s what the statistics say (translated from German: rheinmaasklinikum.de/…/Hintergrundinformationen_z… ):

In Hamburg, 98% of sex-workers examined were diagnosed with at least one traumatic event. 83% had already experienced trauma in childhood (family violence 70%, physical abuse 65%, sexual abuse 48%). Trauma experienced during prostitution was found in 83% (physical attack 61%, rape 61%, threat with a weapon 52%). Here, 53% achieved an illness score in the sense of post-traumatic stress disorder. Abuse and dependence on illegal drugs at 74%. Similar alarming findings can be found in international comparative studies.

And also (…biomedcentral.com/…/s12905-017-0491-y ):

Intimate partner violence was experienced by 21.2% of sex workers, and 23.4% reported client physical or sexual violence. The majority of sex workers (71.2%) reported childhood (i.e., when age <18 years) physical or sexual abuse.

AlmightySnoo,

For questions you may have the !linux community is very welcoming. In theory there are also !linux4noobs and !linux4noobs which should be more targeted at new users but they seem to be quite inactive lately (won’t hurt anyone here to go take a look there and try to keep them alive :-)).

AlmightySnoo,

DJ Ware’s YouTube channel is awesome. For instance, he has a nice video on distros for beginners: www.youtube.com/watch?v=30mLqdQw3qE

AlmightySnoo,

Xournal++ also works well if you want to annotate PDFs. You can’t edit text that’s already there, but you can hide text with white rectangles and then write on top of them.

AlmightySnoo,

Google really scared of those adblockers it seems

AlmightySnoo,

At one point they were scummy enough to automatically add their referral codes to any Amazon link you see. Lots of people today still mindlessly recommend Brave, and that’s what’s wrong in general with the “but the UX is so nice” mentality.

AlmightySnoo,

Those who FOMO-bought into superconductor stocks are going to be in immense pain next week if they haven’t already sold.

Stock prices of Duksung, Seowon and Mobiis ― local manufacturers of tech and materials ― all posted surges during the past few sessions. The price of Duksung rose by 155 percent, Seowon by 73 percent and Mobiis by 127 percent during this week alone.

AlmightySnoo,

Microsoft hidden backdoors are a feature, not a bug

AlmightySnoo,

For example, 2021 Model 3 SR+ vehicles can enable the Cold Weather Feature (heated steering wheel, heated rear seats) for an extra $300. This feature unlock is confirmed to work with the exploit.

So like cucks people were paying for something that their car already had offline, both hardware- and software-wise.

AlmightySnoo,

They really make good stuff. I have their SN30 pro wireless retro gamepad and it’s awesome.

Following the (Italian Competition) Authority's intervention, Google's data portability becomes easier (en.agcm.it)

The Italian Competition Authority has closed its investigation into an alleged abuse of dominant position by Alphabet Inc., Google LLC, Google Ireland Limited and Google Italy S.r.l (Google), by making the proposed commitments binding....

AlmightySnoo,

I just want to know what went through Elon’s mind when he legit thought that a mathbb (blackboard bold) font was a good idea for the logo.

AlmightySnoo,

They’re only desperate to preserve their first-mover advantage by making it harder for the competition to bring AI products to the market.

AlmightySnoo,

I don’t think they care about opening “Pandora’s box” as Microsoft in particular had no issues collaborating with the Chinese military on AI research.

AlmightySnoo,

Great! This “water-resistance” bullshit is the biggest bigtech scam ever, it’s insane how they almost killed repairability in the name of “water-resistance”, that scam should have never been allowed.

AlmightySnoo, (edited )

Not that this changes anything but it’s worth noting that the Taliban were provided a platform on Twitter even before they took power and before even Elon acquired it.

Right now Facebook is also full of hate-speech by Islamists who circumvent hate-speech filters by writing in Arabic or Parsi, as Meta’s AI in those languages is a complete failure, very biased as it’s trained on hateful content already as laws in those countries favor hate-speech (as an example, in Saudi Arabia being an atheist is considered “terrorism” and in most MENA countries homophobic content is normal) and moderators are sourced locally and hence also very biased.

There’s a disturbing trend of big tech being comfortable hosting extremists and borderline terrorist spokespeople. And my unpopular guess is that it is obviously because the US wants the Taliban and other Islamist groups to be legitimized. Why? I’m not sure, geopolitics is totally above my pay grade. But it is clear that historically the US had no issues siding with hardcore Islamists in the MENA region and right now there is a clear trend to normalize Islamist propaganda online.

Reminder that the Taliban are still preventing girls from going to school since they took over, despite a certain president assuring us that the US isn’t abandoning Afghan women and that the Taliban have “changed” anyway, and they cracked down on female university students too.

2 authors say OpenAI 'ingested' their books to train ChatGPT. Now they're suing, and a 'wave' of similar court cases may follow. (www.businessinsider.com)

Two award-winning authors recently sued OpenAI, accusing the generative-AI bastion of violating copyright law by using their published books to train ChatGPT without their consent....

AlmightySnoo,

They are not “flocking to Threads”, they were already in Instagram and Facebook. Meta is going to have to pay one day or another for cowering in front of religious countries by allowing homophobia and anti-atheist and anti-freethinker hate-speech in those countries. I had to deal a lot with those and reporting them did nothing, because moderators are sourced locally from those countries, and the laws in those countries are in favor of that kind of hate-speech.

AlmightySnoo, (edited )

Try learning some Arabic or Hebrew, moderators for content in those languages are mostly sourced from the MENA region where the notion of hate-speech is quite distorted and homophobia and hate-speech directed towards nonbelievers are considered normal. Reporting hate-speech in those languages almost never leads to removals. This is not just anecdotal, it’s really a thing: politico.eu/…/facebook-content-moderation-posts-w…

AlmightySnoo,

I hate Elon but can someone ELI5 why we really need his live coordinates and not just 24h delayed ones?

AlmightySnoo,

My question is why we need it?

AlmightySnoo,

Fair enough, looks like I don’t hate him to that level then as I still don’t see the point in wasting time to do something just because Elon seems to hate it and I certainly won’t let him live in my head rent-free.

AlmightySnoo,

Very weird turn of events given that Toyota has a history of being anti-EVs.

AlmightySnoo,

Guess degoogled phones with custom OSes will soon be illegal then?

AlmightySnoo,

shit like this is why the Fediverse and Tor are necessary

AlmightySnoo,

Elon going to complain about another conspiracy going on while in reality it’s just that when crawlers are not able to open a certain URL they simply assume that the page doesn’t exist anymore. Google certainly didn’t “retaliate”, bots simply couldn’t find those pages anymore.
